Clinical Significance of Intracavernous Injection of Papaverine and Snap-Gauge Test in Diagnosis of Impotent Patients

Abstract
Intracavernous injection of papaverine currently is used as as screening tool and may be the first diagnostic step in the assessment of the impotent patient. It provokes rapidly a complete erection in normal and psychogenic impotent patients, while the same dose injected in patients with vasculogenic impotence induces only slight tumescence. However, the appreciation of its effect must rely on the evaluation of penile rigidity. For measuring penile rigidity the Snap-Gauge band test aso performed.
We tested 32 patients complaing of impotence and 3 normal volunteers with intracavernous injection of 40 §·. papaverine. The rigidity was determined by measuring the angle between the penis and the legs with the patient in the standing position. Afterwards, they underwent Snap-gauge test. The papaverine test can distinguish between patients with vascular and psychogenic problems. Measurement of the erectile angle and Snap-gauge band test are simple, reliable and objective method to evaluate and diagnose differentially the impotent patients.
